Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd. is a joint-stock company owned by the Government of Japan and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. It was established on April 1st, 2024, and replaced the Teito Rapid Transit Authority, which operated since 1941. Tokyo Metro operates separately from the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei Subway), although they share some tracks, riders can share systems like Suica and Pasmo.

Tokyo Metro is renowned for its efficiency and cleanliness, even when heavily used. It is an important part of the city’s infrastructure, seamlessly integrating with intercity and suburban trains, reducing congestion and passenger transfers. This unique design, along with continuous expansion and the creation of safety doors, ensures the network can handle the increasing number of passengers and accommodate millions of tourists. The system’s funding is further bolstered by fees from private rail companies using subway tracks.

The country's culture enhances the riding experience on the Tokyo metro. This culture emphasizes respect for rules, leading to an orderly demeanor and cleanliness. Signs requesting quietness, no eating, and organized boarding make the journey more pleasant compared to other cities.

Stations like Jiyugaoka and Tama Plaza clearly exemplify Tokyo’s success, as both are located in very dense, pedestrian-friendly communities with frequent train services and minimal reliance on automobiles. For example, Jiyugaoka has more bicycle parking than car parking, leading to a high percentage of commuters walking or biking to the station. This model of “rail-integrated communities” contrasts with American transit-oriented development because Tokyo Metro showcases vibrant, mixed-use centers that turn riders into customers throughout the day.
